Water vs Oil-based products

Water and oil both work to deliver ingredients to the skin, but they do so differently.

Water-based products are lightweight and absorb quickly, providing hydration, while oil-based products are more emollient, helping to lock in moisture and nourish the skin.

To maximize effectiveness, apply water-based products first, followed by oils, to prevent oils from creating a barrier that could block absorption and clog pores.

Some active ingredients are more effective when paired with oil, as oil helps to enhance their absorption into the skin.

Many beneficial active ingredients are only compatible with oil, so if you want to get your daily dose, you'll need an oil-based product. For example:

  • Bisabolol (chamomile extract), which minimizes sunspots and hyperpigmentation, plus provides natural antibacterial benefits.
  • Essential fatty acids, which strengthen the skin’s natural barrier against dehydration and dryness, maintain an optimal pH and balance excessive oil production.

Water-based products will always be essential, as they provide crucial hydration and support the skin's overall moisture balance.

Oils are amazing, but a skincare routine that only includes oil will result in declining skin health. Skin will begin to feel dry or tight over time, due to the lack of hydration. Water will always be the absolute best source of hydration for dehydrated skin.

You're also likely to end up with a nutrient imbalance, as certain actives like

  • Vitamin C,
  • Peptides
  • Hyaluronic acid

That can't dissolve in oil will be missing. Without these actives, your goals for anti-aging, brightening, or barrier repair will suffer.

Identifying Oil-Based Products

If the product feels thick or greasy on the skin, leaves an oily residue after application, or contains jojoba, argan, or coconut oils as the first ingredient, it’s most likely oil-based, the texture will also be heavier and sit on the skin longer. Keep in mind there are products that are oil-based that do contain water as the second or third ingredient. An oil-based product would be recommended for someone with dry or dehydrated skin.

Identifying Water-Based Products

Water-based products typically list water as the first ingredient and contain other water-based components, including glycerin and humectants like hyaluronic acid. These products are usually lightweight and absorb easily into the skin without leaving a greasy feel. Water-based products are appropriate for someone with oily, combination, and acne-prone skin.

The bottom line: you need both oil-based and water-based products for a complete and balanced skincare regimen.
